Install a WordPress theme

Wordpress is an open source blog platform which can also be used as a powerful content management system (CMS). You can download the latest WordPress release from their website.

One of the first things you'll probably want to do to your new WordPress blog is change the look of it. There are a number of wordpress themes around the web so you'll be unlikely to not find something that you like. Once you have found and downloaded your chosen style to your computer we can begin!

1. Unzipping

The majority of styles will come in a zipped folder which requires unzipping. Depending on your operating system you may be able to right click and extract the files or you may require some software such as WinRAR or WinZIP. Once your files have been extracted you are ready to continue.

2. Upload

The next step is to upload the folder (not the zipped one) that contains your theme files to your WordPress' /wp-content/themes directory. This can be done using FTP through a client such as FileZilla, a web interface or any other way which your host may have provided.

3. Activate!

Once your style is uploaded point your browser to your WordPress admin page (e.g. www.yourdomain.com/blog/wp-admin) and login. From the left hand menu, select the Themes link under the Appearance section. (You may have to expand the menu using the arrow).

You should now see your style below the default one which comes with WordPress. There is no installation of styles required, WordPress does it automatically, however for it to be seen it must be activated. To do this, simply click the style and select 'Activate' from the top right hand corner of the popup.

That's it! Your blog has a brand new look.
